Colombia Human Rights Questions

A human rights group is alleging that Colombia is preventing investigations about linking the government to militia units there. President Uribe is denying these claims. BBC has the story:

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the Colombian government of blocking investigations into alleged links between paramilitaries and politicians.

Thousands of demobilised fighters have given evidence implicating more than 60 of President Alvaro Uribe’s supporters, including his cousin Mario.

HRW, a New York-based group, said Mr Uribe’s government was “sabotaging” the investigation – a claim he has denied.

American Troops in Iraq

The U.S. and Iraq may soon agree on a timeline for the withdrawal of American soldiers. NY Times has the article:

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration and the government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki on Friday appeared to be on the verge of an agreement that would spell out the conditions under which American troops would remain in Iraq and a timeline for their eventual departure.

Simultaneous activity in Washington and Baghdad signalled that an accord was near on a security arrangement, formally called a status of forces agreement, to govern the conduct of American forces in Iraq for the remainder of their time there.

Ending the Red Sox’s season isn’t easy, no matter how likely it seems.

The New York Yankees didn’t do it after taking a 3-0 lead in the 2004 AL championship series. The Cleveland Indians didn’t, either, after building a 3-1 lead in last year’s ALCS. Boston won both of those best-of-seven matchups before sweeping both World Series.
On Thursday night, Tampa Bay found out that a big lead isn’t big enough against the defending champions.

Leading 7-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, and seven outs away from their first World Series, the Rays’ luck changed and the Red Sox came back for an 8-7 win that cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-2 in the ALCS.

“It was pretty much the most amazing thing I’ve ever been a part of,” said Coco Crisp, who singled in the tying run in the eighth.

The series shifts to St. Petersburg, Fla., for Saturday night’s sixth game. Boston’s Josh Beckett, whose status as a postseason star is taking a beating, is scheduled to face James Shields, the hard-luck loser in Boston’s 2-0 win in the series opener.

Flagstaff Helicopter Rescue

The AZ DPS has cut late night rescue flights based out of Flagstaff to save money. There will still be some service coming from Phoenix. I guess just be careful hiking or camping up north. AZ Daily Sun has the story:

In a cost-saving move, officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety have decided to ground helicopter rescue missions out of Flagstaff between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The change will reduce flight operations by about 350 hours a year and save $52,000. And even though helicopters will continue to respond from Phoenix to some emergencies in northern Arizona during the evening hours, local law enforcement officials are worried the delay will affect search and rescue efforts.

In a letter addressed to police chiefs and sheriffs in and around Flagstaff, Kingman and Tucson, DPS Director Roger Vanderpool stated that beginning Saturday, the helicopters stationed in those areas will be grounded between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The State Department has issued a safety warning around the Nogales area of Mexico because of rising drug violence. The local government on the Mexican side of Nogales still feel that that it’s safe for tourists: AZ Daily Star has an article:

NOGALES, Sonora — Tourists shouldn’t cancel their trips to Nogales and other parts of Sonora just because of the U.S. State Department’s updated travel alert, city officials from the Mexican border city said Thursday.

The travel alert — which mentions Nogales, Sonora, and Route 15 between Nogales and Hermosillo among areas of concern due to increasing drug-cartel-fueled violence — has generated unnecessary fear and concern, said Marco Antonio Martínez Dabdoub, mayor of Nogales, Sonora. The alert came out on Tuesday.

Ozone Pollution to Worsen Under Climate Change

Surface-level ozone, a poisonous gas that claims tens of thousands of lives annually, could get much worse thanks to the effects of climate change, according to new research.

While international treaties like the Kyoto Protocol attempt to curb greenhouse gas emissions and limit the effects of global warming, researchers say ozone is a silent killer that has stayed below the radar.

“It’s the third most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide and methane,” David Fowler of the National Environmental Research Council in the United Kingdom said. “But it’s not the biggest one, and it’s not the biggest threat to human health — particulates in the atmosphere are worse. So it’s a sort of Cinderella gas that has been mostly ignored.”

Progress in Fallujah, Iraq

The economy is on everyone’s mind right now, but there’s some good news out of Iraq. Apparently the U.S. military (specifically Marines) are leaving Fallujah, because the violence is declining so much. Good luck to all of our troops, and hopefully they can all come home soon. FoxNews is covering the story:

WASHINGTON — When Marine Maj. Gen. John Kelly deployed to Iraq in February, the violence had fallen so low in Anbar province that he began figuring out how to start closing bases and prepare to go home.

In the last 10 months the Marines in Fallujah have done what was unthinkable before the surge began — they have quietly transferred out of one of Anbar province’s largest cities. FOX News has learned in an exclusive interview with Kelly from Fallujah that 80 percent of the move is complete. In February there were 8,000 Marines living at Fallujah base. Now there are about 3,000 left. By Nov. 14 there will be none.

Crumbling Glacier Quakes as It Breaks

On the west coast of Greenland, a glacier’s crumbling edge is producing seismic groans.

As the Arctic warms, scientists are keeping a close eye the Jakobshavn glacier. Already one of the world’s fastest moving ice streams, over the last decade scientists watched alarmed as it sped up further, sometimes sliding dozens of feet per day toward the Ilulissat Fjord.
